Shared Print Program Phase 1

Phase 1 of the Shared Print Program officially launched in June 2017 and continued through September 30, 2017. At the close of the phase, 16 million monographs were retained, which represents 4.8 million individual titles. Almost 50 member libraries signed the Shared Print Agreement (MOU) which recognizes their continued support of the program by retaining shared print volumes for 25 years (through December 31, 2042).

 Phase 1 Retention Libraries

A wide variety of HathiTrust partner libraries have volunteered to participate in Phase 1 of the Shared Print Program. These include libraries at universities and colleges from across the United States and from Canada and Australia.

During Phase 1, these libraries will play two primary roles:

  • Serve as planning partners with the HathiTrust Shared Print Advisory Committee (SPAC) to finalize the policies, business model and MOU that will govern the HathiTrust Shared Print Program, and
  • Work with HathiTrust to identify which of the library’s matching print monograph holdings the library will agree to retain.

At the end of Phase 1 (estimated spring/summer 2017), the libraries will have an opportunity to review the final policies and MOU and then to make a decision about going forward with the proposed retention commitments.

Phase 1 Planning, Updates, and Reports

 Phase 1 Statistics

50 HathiTrust member libraries committed to retain more than 16 million volumes for 25 years. These volumes correspond to more than 4.8 million individual book titles held in the HathiTrust Digital Library (about 65% of all HathiTrust digital monographs).

About 25% of the proposed 16.6 million volumes were already committed to another shared print program. These programs include The Research Collections and Preservation Consortium, University of California Libraries Shared Print, Eastern Academic Scholars Trust, Federal Depository Library Program, Florida Academic Repository, Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries.  Of the 4.8 million committed titles held among the 120 HathiTrust member collections, the majority are moderately held between 6 and 49 HathiTrust member libraries.

Of the 4.8 million titles committed by 50 Retention Libraries half were committed by 2 – 5 Retention Libraries. They were matched by OCLC record numbers.
