Mapping the Elephant:
Register for February and March Member-to-Member Webcasts
Mapping the Elephant, the webcast series by HathiTrust members, for HathiTrust members, continues in February and March. During the webcasts, member presenters discuss an aspect of HathiTrust that has had an impact on their library, research, teaching, or institutional mission with time reserved to answer questions by attendees.
Registration for Mapping the Elephant webcast series events is required and is open to both members and non-members. Webcasts will also be recorded and posted to the HathiTrust YouTube Channel.

The HTRC Workshop Series Registration Now Open
Registration is now open for the HathiTrust Research Center’s spring 2020 workshop series, with events at the University of Iowa, Southern Methodist University, University of Colorado- Boulder, and Princeton University. Each training includes a full-day workshop for librarians and a half-day workshop for researchers. Register, or share the news with your community. Please note: Workshop registration numbers are correct at the time of publishing.

Reminder: HTRC Monthly Maintenance Period
The Research Center observes a monthly downtime period for maintenance of its systems. The downtime occurs on the 2nd Sunday and Monday of each month. All HTRC services are unavailable during the downtime. Upcoming maintenance periods include: March 8-9, April 12-13, and May 10-11.
Welcome Glen Worthey to the HathiTrust Research Center
We are pleased to announce that Glen Worthey has joined the HathiTrust Research Center as the Associate Director for Research Support Services based at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, School of Information Sciences.
Glen Worthey was Digital Humanities Librarian at Stanford, 1997-2019, and was founding head of Stanford’s Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Research (CIDR). He’s held many roles in the international Digital Humanities community, and is currently Chair-Elect of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) Executive Board. His graduate work was in Russian children’s literature at the University of California, Berkeley.

The HathiTrust Program Steering Committee recently announced the membership of four new working groups and task forces to support specific objectives set forth in HathiTrust’s Strategic Directions 2019-2023.

New International Copyright Review Project: Commonwealth Government Publications
In January, the Copyright Review Program began a new project to review government documents for crown copyright. This includes UK, Australia, and Canadian government works. Commonwealth countries that utilize crown copyright give protection based on the date of publication, in most cases 50 years from the date of publication.
The team expects to review items published through 1969 and make eligible government works of Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom available to international users. Over the next several years, 12 individuals from 5 member libraries in Canada and 19 individuals from U.S. member libraries are participating and will review the copyright of 48,851 items.
Six institutions are participating for the first time in the Copyright Review Program: University of Texas San Antonio (HathiTrust member since 2014); McMaster University (HathiTrust member since 2018); University of British Columbia (HathiTrust member since 2013); Queen’s University (HathiTrust member since 2019); University of Kentucky (HathiTrust member since 2018); and the University of Alberta (HathiTrust member since 2013).

The Cornell University Land Grant/Statutory College Publications is a HathiTrust featured collection published in late 2019. It includes 12,701 items from or about the four statutory or “contract colleges” listed below that are operated by Cornell University under contract with New York state. The collection also documents the work of prominent figures and institutional bodies fulfilling their “knowledge with a public purpose” mission such as Cooperative Extension and Agricultural Experiment Stations.

The collection is believed to be the single most comprehensive source of digital content as it relates to these entities. When I saw the call for volunteers for the User Support Team, I jumped at the chance to apply – here was my opportunity to give back a little to something that was super helpful in my daily work, and would give me the chance to learn more about how [HathiTrust] works.”
Jenn says the most gratifying moments during her tenure in HTUS are “when a patron writes to just let you know how excited they were to find something in HathiTrust because they didn’t even know an item existed and it turned out to be central to their research. Whether it’s professional or personal research, seeing patrons excited about what we provide is awesome.”
New Membership on FedDocs Advisory Group
At the end of 2019, HathiTrust welcomed new members to a refreshed HathiTrust Federal Documents Advisory Committee (FDAC) which will bring new HathiTrust member library perspectives to the U.S. Federal Documents Program. The group will focus on collective strategies to solve shared challenges such as collaborative digitization of federal documents; methods and operations to characterize, improve, and enhance the quality of federal documents metadata; and strategies to expand awareness and promote use of our digital federal documents collection.
