Coming in January 2023: NEW Public Domain Items
In January, HathiTrust will once again celebrate the return of Public Domain Day. This coming year, titles published in 1927 will enter the public domain in the United States, including more than 61,000 items in the HathiTrust collection. Some of these will also be viewable globally. Global readers will also gain public domain access to 41,745 titles published in 1897, and up through 1902 if published in Canada or Australia.
Here is a sneak peek of works that will be opening in January. Your favorites might already be open thanks to the copyright review program.

With thousands of contributions from member libraries, HathiTrust is uniquely positioned to increase public access to these items available in its digital repository and to preserve these items for access long into the future.

Now Open: Nominations for Federal Documents Advisory Committee
HathiTrust is now seeking nominations to fill positions on this group, which since 2016 has guided HathiTrust in developing the largest independent collection of digitized and preserved U.S. Federal Documents. The Federal Documents Advisory Committee makes key recommendations regarding policies and procedures necessary to implement and sustain a HathiTrust Federal Documents Program for the benefit of the membership.
Federal Documents Advisory Committee (FDAC)
Number of Seats: 4 (2 seats are continuing, for a total of 6)
Term Length: 2-year term (January 2023-December 2024)
Open to HathiTrust members
General Qualifications: Experience with use cases for U.S. federal documents and the needs of students and scholars. Familiarity with government documents and collaborative activities related to library collections of U.S. federal documents.
How to Submit Nominations
Nominations may be submitted by Library Directors, Member Representatives, Primary Contacts or through self-nominations. Nominations should include the name, title, and institution of the nominee, and a short description of their qualifications and interests for the appointment. To minimize confusion, please obtain consent from the nominee prior to submitting a nomination for that individual. Please send nominations to Heather Christenson (christeh@hathitrust.org) with the subject line: “HT FDAC Nomination'' by January 13, 2023.
1.3+ Million Items: HathiTrust’s U.S. Federal Documents Collection
Since 2016, HathiTrust has coordinated collective action to build and preserve an independent collection of U.S. Federal Documents available for public access. We have since developed the largest independent collection of digitized and preserved U.S. Federal Documents. Our vision to expand and enhance digital access to government publications from across dozens of U.S. agencies bolsters both democracy and scholarship. More than 40 of our contributing member libraries are members of the Federal Depository Library Program and through their efforts, HathiTrust is able to preserve the digitized collection of 1.3+ million items in an independently managed repository.

Webinar: Introduction to the Metadata Quality Improvement Program
Join us in January 2023 to learn about the new Metadata Quality Improvement Program (MQIP). The program supports contributing members in improving, correcting, and enhancing their own catalogs – the source records for all HathiTrust items. After a successful pilot this summer and fall with seven member libraries, the program will expand this year to all contributing libraries with the possibility of expanding to all member libraries in the future. Graham Dethmers, Metadata Analyst, will outline the program along with pilot participants from Cornell University and University of California - San Diego.
