Welcoming New Members to HathiTrust
We are pleased to announce that University of Montana Missoula has joined the HathiTrust member community. See the full membership list on our website.
Welcome to Jennifer Vinopal, Our New Associate Director
We are thrilled to welcome our very first Associate Director, Jennifer Vinopal, who officially started this week. Jennifer’s portfolio includes day-to-day management of HathiTrust’s operations, including our digital library services and programs, and she will have a major role in implementing activities funded by our Mellon-funded grant Building Resilience for Preservation and Access. Read more about Jennifer and join us in wishing her well during this exciting time for our organization.
Now Open: Nominations for Program Steering Committee
We are now seeking nominations to fill positions on the Program Steering Committee, which serves at the direction of the Board of Governors.
Program Steering Committee (PSC)
Number of Seats: 2
Term Length: July 2023-June 2026
Appointees are typically experienced in senior leadership at their member library with initiatives involving metadata, collections, information technology, and/or user experience. See the complete PSC selection criteria and overview. The Board of Governors seeks to make appointments that maximize the diversity of perspectives and values the ability of nominees to contribute a non-dominant cultural perspective.
Nominations may be submitted by Library Directors, Member Representatives, Primary Contacts, or through self-nominations. Nominations should include the name, title, and institution of the nominee, and a short description of their qualifications and interests for the appointment. To minimize confusion, please obtain consent from the nominee prior to submitting a nomination for that individual. Please send nominations to Melissa Stewart (mmstewa@hathitrust.org) with the appropriate subject line: “HT PSC Nomination” by Tuesday, April 6, 2021.
HathiTrust Slack Community Shifts Focus
After three years, we have decided to wind down the HathiTrust Slack Community. Beginning March 23 we will no longer monitor or post on the main #General channel. However, the active channels used by several user support teams will remain — the Digital Object Quality Content (#DOQC) and and Bibliographic Correction Groups (#BCG). These groups regularly use the channels to communicate on user problems and troubleshooting. We began this experiment during the height of the pandemic, and while it has been worthwhile, its usefulness has run its course. Sustaining a thriving, online community takes dedicated effort and resources that we cannot spare from other organizational activities. We thank the community for attending pop-ups and jumping in with ideas over the years. As always, if you have questions or issues to report, please contact us at support@hathitrust.org. Look for regular opportunities to connect with other members in our webinars and events.
Crown Copyright Project Concludes with 69K Reviews
In early 2020, the Copyright Review Program began a new project to review government documents for crown copyright, including UK, Australia, and Canadian government works. This work was accomplished through the contributed time of 15 individuals from 10 member libraries in Canada and the U.S. The team recently celebrated the project completion after many rounds of reviews and with final copyright determinations made on 69,070 items. They were able to open more than 53,000 government documents for public domain access in Canada, Australia, and the UK.
The collection of commonwealth documents represent publications spanning the 1930s to 1970s. Of those, 30,020 were published in Canada; 32,085 were published in the UK; and 6,865 were published in Australia. Titles include Ale and Lager Beer and Kewagama Lake map-area, Quebec.
The Copyright Review Program has operated since 2008 and in June 2022, surpassed 1 million total items reviewed. The program has relied on more than 83,000 hours of in-kind staff time from HathiTrust member libraries and have determined more than 570,000 items in HathiTrust to be in the public domain. Thank you to all our members contributing staff time to this Program!
Send Us Your Favorite Titles for the New HathiTrust Homepage
Our new website will be live later this spring, and we are gathering ideas for the redesigned homepage featuring items from the collection. We know you’ve got favorites and hope that you’ll share them with us. If you have any public collections you’re fond of, we’d like to feature those, too. Use this form to submit your favorite HathiTrust items or collections for consideration in the launch or for future features. (To obtain a sharing link, use the Permanent link to this item or Link to the Collection in the left navigation.)
