Collections Committee Call for Nominations
The HathiTrust Program Steering Committee (PSC) invites nominations to fill two (2) three-year terms on the HathiTrust Collections Committee, beginning July 2018. Reporting to the PSC, the Collections Committee holds a fundamental and ongoing responsibility to advise the HathiTrust partnership on overall strategy for collection development, policy development, and planning and analysis. Developing content strategies that enhance HathiTrust’s ability to meet emergent needs of digital scholarship is of increasing interest. Read the full Committee charge here.
Composition of the committee strives to represent a balanced diversity of HathiTrust member institutions (size, type, and geography), richness of relevant expertise (collection development and management, digital collections, digital scholarship, rights management, bibliographic metadata, etc.), and proportionality of contributor interests.
Nominations may be submitted by Member Representatives, but self-nominations are also welcome. Nominations should include the name, title, and institution of the nominee, and a short description of the nominee's qualifications for the appointment. Please send nominations to Melissa Stewart (mmstewa@hathitrust.org) with the subject line "HT Collections Committee Nomination" by June 21, 2018.
University of Cincinnati Praises HathiTrust as “Tremendous Asset”
In May, the University of Cincinnati joined HathiTrust. In a recent press release, Kristi A. Nelson, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, said
“... HathiTrust provides a robust infrastructure of digital scholarly content and tools to further the academic pursuits of the next-minded UC community. The academic collaborations and resources available through HathiTrust will be a tremendous asset to UC faculty, staff, and students as we push to redefine learning and lead public universities into a new era of innovation and impact.”
University of Cincinnati is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, as are other recent additions to the HathiTrust community Brigham Young University, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Library, and Wayne State University.

Members: Annual Print Holdings Updates Due June 30
The annual call for updated print holdings is now underway. HathiTrust relies on accurate print holdings data from our membership to provide core services and calculate annual fees. If you’ve already submitted updated holdings for your institution, thank you! If not, please plan to do so by June 30, 2018.

HTRC Summer Workshops: Text Mining for Librarians
Are you a librarian interested in learning more about digital humanities methods and text mining?
Registration is now open for July and August workshops in San Diego, Seattle, and Honolulu as a part of the IMLS-funded project “Digging Deeper, Reaching Further: Libraries Empowering Users to Mine the HathiTrust Digital Library Resources” (DDRF) project.
These 1-day workshops introduce library and information professionals to text mining and related digital scholarship methods, with a focus on the tools and data from the HathiTrust Research Center. The aim of the DDRF workshops is to empower librarians to become more conversant in digital scholarship and digital humanities and engage with digital projects at their institutions.
Limited seats remain for the May 2018 workshop in Houston, and registration will open soon for workshops in Washington (D.C.), Milwaukee, and New York.
You DO NOT need to be affiliated with a member library to attend and no experience is necessary!

Don’t Forget: HTRC Office Hours on June 6
The HathiTrust Research Center now offers a support service for research and teaching with HTRC called HTRC, Help! Scholars and librarians with questions about computational text analysis using HathiTrust corpus data can now join monthly virtual office hours, held the second Wednesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. ET. An expert from the HTRC will answer questions and discuss research projects. Additionally, extended answers to frequently asked questions about HTRC are shared online.

Shared Print Program
We have launched Phase 2 of the HathiTrust Shared Print Program with a call for member libraries to participate. As of June 5, 53 libraries have offered to serve as prospective Phase 2 Retention Libraries, of which 27 are new to the program. A total of 75 HathiTrust member libraries are serving as Retention Libraries in one or both phases. We ask interested libraries that have not yet responded for Phase 2 to do so by June 8 by email to Shared Print Program Officer Lizanne Payne at elpayne@hathitrust.org.
The goal of Phase 2 is to secure retention commitments for print volumes corresponding to HathiTrust digital monographs that did not receive a retention commitment from any HathiTrust library in Phase 1 (estimated 2.2 million monograph titles remaining).
During summer 2018, we will analyze member libraries’ print holdings (already supplied to HathiTrust) to identify proposed retention commitments for Phase 2. Unlike Phase 1, we will aim to prioritize which holdings should be retained based on characteristics such as amount of overlap within and outside HathiTrust, desired number of copies, and comparison to other shared print retention commitments.
HathiTrust has contracted with OCLC Sustainable Collection Services to provide services to help us perform this analysis. We aim to conclude Phase 2 with new commitments and Retention Libraries around the end of the year.

But What About Copyright?

In this recent seminar, Melissa Levine, who served as PI for the second two IMLS grants for HathiTrust’s Copyright Review Management System, discusses copyright from a legal and ethical perspective. As libraries think intentionally about issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, the community recognizes how free, open online collections make it possible for everyone to study primary evidence regarding race, religion, gender, national origin, indigenous peoples, and more. But copyright touches almost all aspects of the work of libraries, museums, and archives. It affects what gets produced and how, what gets collected and preserved, who gets to see or use collections, and how they can be used.
She discusses these matters and some of the current efforts to address these concerns at scale, including the HathiTrust’s Copyright Review Management System, global work with the Digital Public Library of America and Europeana initiative in the creation of RightsStatements.org, and how the Community Standards for 3D Data Preservation’s working group on copyright is thinking about more than copyright.
