Emergency Temporary Access Service Updates
ETAS Continuation Assessments
During January, HathiTrust is working with member libraries to assess the continuing disruption to their collection access services, in order to confirm qualified continuation, activation, or reactivation of Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) through May 2021 at each library.
ETAS Contacts have been asked to share plans for the upcoming term (January–May 2021) by Monday, February 1, using the ETAS Continuation Assessment Form they received in email. The form may be previewed as a PDF, but the assessment must be submitted via the Google Form online. Review the ETAS Continuation Factors to identify which disruptions to print collection access you will be experiencing for the upcoming term.

Our goal is to ensure that your library can confidently provide uninterrupted access to copyrighted titles in HathiTrust that are also held in your print collection for as long as your collection access is disrupted by a temporary, emergency situation such as the global health pandemic.
ETAS: Did You Know?
I’m teaching a class, and the students all need access to the same book to finish an assignment. Can they all read it at the same time?
HathiTrust can provide simultaneous access only to the number of print copies that your institution’s library holds. For example, if your library holds only one print copy on the shelves, then only one user affiliated with your university can access the digital book in HathiTrust at a time. If your library holds two print copies, then only two users can access the digital book simultaneously. You may want to encourage your students to return the book as soon as they are done using it.
Limited Spots Remaining for HTRC’s Spring 2021 Virtual Workshop Series
There are limited spots still open for the second series of the HathiTrust Research Center’s spring workshops.
The workshops will be offered virtually in two series this spring. Each series consists of four workshops which will be spread over four weeks. Unlike in previous workshops, these virtual series are open to ANY researcher or librarian affiliated with a member institution. Series 1 is currently full. Limited spots remain in series 2 (4/2, 4/9, 4/16, 4/23, all 12:00 pm-2:00 pm ET) Register now!
The four workshops in each series are:
1: Introduction to HTRC for text and data mining
2: HTRC Extracted Features dataset
3: HTRC Data Capsules environment
4: Supporting text and data mining from the library
Librarians who attend all four days will be invited to join the HTRC Trainers Community.
HTRC Selects 4 Projects for Special SCWAReD Round of Advanced Collaborative Support
The HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC) has selected four projects to participate in a special round of its Advanced Collaborative Support (ACS) program, generously funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The four “Scholar-Curated Worksets for Analysis, Reuse & Dissemination (SCWAReD)” projects are:
Mining the Native American Authored Works in HathiTrust for Insights - Kun Lu, Raina Heaton, and Raymond Orr (University of Oklahoma)
The Black Fantastic: Curated Vocabularies, Artifact Analysis and Identification - Clarissa West-White (Bethune Cookman University) and Seretha Williams (Augusta University)
Creating Period-Specific Worksets for Latin American Fiction - José Eduardo González (University of Nebraska, Lincoln)
The National Negro Health Digital Project: Recovering and Restoring a Black Public Health Corpus - Kim Gallon (Purdue University)
The projects will seek to build HTRC worksets drawn from materials related to historically under-resourced and marginalized textual communities, and in doing so, to identify gaps in the HathiTrust collection where such communities are not represented in the digital library. The worksets will be analyzed using text and data mining techniques. The worksets, derived data outputs, and associated documentation will be shared at the end of the projects as illustrative research models of the text and data mining process. The four research models will join a flagship model that is being developed concurrently in collaboration with co-PI Maryemma Graham and her Project on the History of Black Writing at the University of Kansas.
Congratulations to HathiTrust members Augusta University (HathiTrust member since 2018), University of Oklahoma (HathiTrust member since 2013), University of Nebraska (HathiTrust member since 2012), and Purdue University (HathiTrust member since 2008) for their participation in the projects!
The projects will run for 20 months. Keep an eye out for periodic updates about this exciting work!
Add HathiTrust Records to Your Discovery Service
During his first year, HathiTrust Metadata Analyst, Graham Dethmers, collaborated with third-party discovery service vendors to update their HathiTrust content streams. Today, these content streams are up-to-date and contain Full View items only.
Many members have integrated Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) titles into their catalogs to make them easier for patrons to identify. It is also possible to make HathiTrust Full View content available through your third-party discovery services, such as EDS (EBSCO), Primo (Ex Libris), Summon (ProQuest), and WorldCat (OCLC). If you have not selected and activated any HathiTrust collections (to which you may subscribe free of cost), please reach out to your third-party partner representative to inquire how to do so.

Now Available: Public Domain Day Collections
1925 U.S. Publications Collection
More than 35,000 items in the collection originally published in 1925 are now viewable in the U.S., and some globally. Highlights include Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf; The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald; In the American Grain by William Carlos Williams; and Along the Road, Notes and Essays of a Tourist by Aldous Huxley.
Worldwide Collection January 20
The 27,000+ titles newly opened to the world include items published before 1900 in Canada or Australia, or before 1880 in other non-U.S. locations.

Coming Soon! Library Collection Comparison Tool
The year-old California Digital Library (CDL), Center for Research Libraries (CRL), and HathiTrust collaboration for shared print infrastructure has developed a new library collection comparison tool. The tool allows anyone to take print serial and journal holdings data, compare it against shared print commitments across North America, as well as select trusted digital archives (like JSTOR and HathiTrust), in order to make data-driven decisions in managing collections. Future developments are already underway to include monographs.
The tool is just one piece of the bigger shared print infrastructure that the collaborative is focused on integrating. By gathering the threads of the broader shared print community’s considerable efforts, the collaborative aims to advance shared print’s transition to a new phase of integration and interoperability, one that has shared print embedded into the collection lifecycle. HathiTrust Shared Print Commitments are now Discoverable in OCLC Systems
HathiTrust, with the help of our many retention libraries, recently completed registering a significant portion of our program’s shared print commitments in OCLC’s Shared Print Registration Service. While we are still in the process of cleaning up a few outstanding commitments, we wanted to share this exciting news with members because for the first time ever, HathiTrust shared print commitments are discoverable. Please see the OCLC shared print page here for more information on how to discover these items.
The primary goals of the HathiTrust Shared Print Program are to ensure preservation of print and digital collections by linking the two, to reduce overall costs of collection management for HathiTrust members, and to catalyze national/continental collective management of collections. Now that our commitments are discoverable, members can finally use them to make informed collection management decisions.
New Process for Reallocating Lost or Missing Commitments
HathiTrust is excited to announce a new process for reallocating lost or missing commitments. As a retention library for HathiTrust’s Shared Print Program, member libraries agree to “take all reasonable steps to replace lost, stolen, or seriously-damaged Retained Holdings in a timely manner and to notify HathiTrust if a volume cannot be replaced.” Until now, members have not had a formal process for reporting these issues to HathiTrust, or clear instructions on actions to take to deal with these. As a result, HathiTrust has developed a new process for reporting and reallocating lost or missing commitments within 30 days of a lost or missing item being discovered.
