Membership Elects 4 New Board Members & Passes 2022 Budget
Meet the newest members of the HathiTrust Board of Governors who will begin their terms in January 2022. Claire Stewart, University of Nebraska (HathiTrust member since 2012), was selected in August as the chair elect. In 2022, she will serve on the Executive Committee and begin her term as Chair of the Board of Governors in 2023. (University of Nebraska press release)
Final Call for Member Meeting Registration
It’s not too late to register for the virtual 2021 Member Meeting, “Community in a Time of Change.” This year’s shortened format will focus on the annual update from Executive Director, Mike Furlough, and include a keynote address by Kim Gallon of Purdue University (founding HathiTrust member), who is head of COVIDBlack and lead on the HathiTrust Research Center/Mellon-funded Advanced Collaborative Support (ACS) project: The National Negro Health Digital Project: Recovering and Restoring a Black Public Health Corpus. The meeting is open to anyone affiliated with a member library. We encourage all members to pass along meeting and registration information to their teams and colleagues.

Slack Pop-Up Chats Return on the HathiTrust Community Slack
After a summer hiatus, the Slack Pop-Ups are back! Beginning in November, we’ll again be hosting regular chats on the HathiTrust Community Slack channel. Members bring their expertise to an informal online conversation on various topics. Anyone may attend and no registration is required. Slack Pop-Up in November: Serial Copyright Review Pilot

Join member contributors from the HathiTrust Serial Copyright Review Pilot who’ll share the ins and outs of this investigative pilot and answer your questions. Throughout the summer they piloted a workflow to identify public domain U.S. serials. Their work has helped prepare the HathiTrust Copyright Review Program to tackle periodical publications which we know are valuable to our members. Reviewers joining the chat will be Renata Ewing, California Digital Library; Jonah Yan McAllister-Erickson, University of Pittsburgh; Monica Moore, University of Notre Dame; and Nicolle L. Nicastro, Pennsylvania State University.

HathiTrust membership grew rapidly in the past 18 months, from approximately 140 members in early 2020 to more than 200 members today. Meeting member and user needs with the Emergency Temporary Access Service occupied most outreach activities during that time. While ETAS was an extraordinary benefit realized from more than a decade of mass digitization, HathiTrust has always been more than its digitized collection. In mid-October, we invited new members to a webinar highlighting other programs, services, and future opportunities. The webinar included representatives from long-time member libraries, Rice Majors, Associate University Librarian Scholarly Resources at University of California-Davis (HathiTrust member since 2009), and Michelle Paolillo, Digital Lifecycle Services Manager at Cornell University (HathiTrust member since 2010), who shared the benefits they see to their libraries. HathiTrust regularly hires graduate or undergraduate students to support projects or ongoing operations requiring work hours or expertise beyond the HathiTrust staff capacity. “At HathiTrust, copyright holders can use a Creative Commons license to open their work for full view, and I help process those licenses. Starting in February 2020, the University of California, Davis started to reach out to their alumni with this information to assist in opening their thesis or dissertation in HathiTrust. One of the highlights of my work is getting responses from thesis and dissertation authors, excited that they are now able to easily share their work with colleagues and their families. For authors who completed their degree decades ago, being able to make their work available for students and researchers can be meaningful and make them feel valued by their alma mater.”
